How water intake calculator works

Daily water needs depend mostly on body weight, with more added for exercise and a small adjustment for climate. A common rule of thumb is about 35 millilitres per kilogram of body weight per day, plus extra for activity and a boost for hot weather.

This calculator uses that rule: 35 ml per kg of body weight, plus about 12 ml for every minute of exercise, then a 10% increase for a hot climate and a 5% reduction for a cold climate. It reports the result in millilitres, litres, fluid ounces, and cups so you can use whichever unit you prefer.

Does exercise increase my water needs?
Yes. The calculator adds about 12 ml per minute of exercise, so 30 minutes adds around 360 ml to your daily target.
Why does climate matter?
You lose more water to sweating in hot weather, so the calculator adds 10% in a hot climate. In cold weather you lose a little less to sweat but more to dry air, so it reduces the target by 5%.
Does this include water from food?
No. Food provides about 20% of daily water intake, so the total from drinking can be a bit lower. Treat the result as a guideline and drink to thirst.
