How calories burned calculator works

The calories you burn during exercise depend on the activity's intensity, your body weight, and how long you do it. Sports medicine uses MET (metabolic equivalent) values to express intensity: one MET is your resting energy use, and an activity at 8 METs uses eight times that much energy.

This calculator uses the standard formula calories = MET ร— weight (kg) ร— duration (hours). It looks up the MET for each of 16 common activities โ€” walking, running, cycling, swimming, weight lifting, yoga, and more โ€” and applies your weight and duration. Imperial pounds are converted to kilograms internally.

Pick an activity, enter your weight and the duration in minutes, and the tool returns the calories burned plus the per-hour rate. Use it to plan workouts, track energy expenditure, or balance food intake against exercise. The values are estimates; actual burn varies with fitness, intensity, and efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MET?
Metabolic equivalent โ€” a measure of activity intensity. One MET is your resting energy use. Walking is about 3.5 METs and running is about 9.8, so running burns roughly 2.8 times as many calories per minute at the same weight.
How are the calories calculated?
With the standard formula calories = MET ร— weight (kg) ร— duration (hours). For 30 minutes of running at 9.8 METs and 70 kg, that is 9.8 ร— 70 ร— 0.5 = 343 kcal.
Are the calorie estimates accurate?
They are good averages based on validated MET tables, but actual burn varies with fitness, effort, terrain, and efficiency. Treat the number as an estimate, and use a heart-rate monitor for personal precision.
Can I use pounds instead of kilograms?
Yes. Set the units to Imperial and enter your weight in pounds; the calculator converts to kilograms before applying the formula. The result is the same in calories.
